Our Legacy
Dr. A.J. Mehta, the founder of the Retort Group, began his journey in 1933 as a distributor for the products of Retort Laboratories in the United States. The company continued importing and distributing the products until India's independence. An inspired Dr. Mehta then established a manufacturing facility in India, in accordance with the restrictions imposed post-Independence. Retort Group has grown over the last nine decades, turning Dr. Mehta's vision and mission into a remarkable reality.
Building on the legacy of Dr. A.J. Mehta, his son Vijay A. Mehta took the company to newer heights, expanding its presence internationally. He laid the foundation for today's global success — the Retort Group of Companies. Under the leadership of Dr. Nandita A Thakkar and Varun A Thakkar, the Retort Group is committed to delivering innovative healthcare products to enhance the health and well-being of individuals. Retort has developed robust in-house quality control systems that comply with international standards and GMP norms, ensuring the highest level of product quality and safety.

Dr. Nandita A. Thakkar
Dr. Nandita A Thakkar is a renowned and respected gynaecologist and obstetrician based in Chennai, with over three decades of clinical expertise in women's health. She specialises in reproductive medicine, high-risk pregnancy management, genetic counselling in obstetrics and gynaecology, and lifestyle-related gynaecological disorders.
Dr. Thakkar serves as the Director of the Retort Group and leads Nandita's Fertility and Research Centre in Chetpet, Chennai. She completed her MBBS from Madras University and her MD in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Sri Ramachandra University, Chennai. Her illustrious career includes pivotal roles at leading institutions such as IRM – Madras Medical Mission and Nawaloka Fertility Centre in Colombo.
Renowned for her compassionate and holistic approach, Dr. Thakkar is widely regarded by patients for her deep medical insights and reassuring demeanor. She remains an active member of several prestigious medical organizations.
Varun A. Thakkar
Varun A. Thakkar is a distinguished entrepreneur and an elite athlete, who is presently the Director of Retort Pharmaceuticals. With a unique blend of business acumen and sporting excellence, he exemplifies leadership and dedication across two demanding arenas.
A native of Tamil Nadu, Varun has represented India on the global stage as an Olympic sailor, competing in the Skiff – 49er event at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. His participation in international sailing competitions stands as a testament to his discipline, resilience, and commitment to excellence. His leadership is marked by a strategic vision and a deep commitment to quality and sustainability in the Ayurvedic and healthcare sectors.
